What is the difference between abrasive cloth and sandpaper?

Emery cloth is a common abrasive material that can be used for grinding, polishing and other operations on a variety of materials. The following are some common ways to use emery cloth:

1. Preparation
Choose the right emery cloth
Choose the particle size of the emery cloth according to the material to be polished and the purpose of polishing. For example, if you want to perform preliminary polishing on a rough metal surface, you may need to choose emery cloth with a coarser particle size (such as 80-120 mesh); if you want to finely polish or polish a surface that has been preliminarily polished, you should choose emery cloth with a finer particle size (such as 220-600 mesh). Different materials may also require different types of emery cloth. For example, wood materials may be more suitable for softer emery cloth, while metal materials can use emery cloth with a slightly harder texture.
Check the integrity of the emery cloth
Before using it, check whether the emery cloth is damaged or the sand grains are unevenly shed. If the emery cloth is damaged, it may cause uneven polishing during use and may even scratch the surface of the material being polished.
2. Basic grinding operation
Handheld sandpaper grinding
For grinding small areas or irregularly shaped objects, you can directly hold the sandpaper to operate. Wrap the sandpaper on your fingers or a suitable tool (such as a small wooden block) and grind in a certain direction (usually along the grain direction of the material, if it is a textureless material such as metal, keep a stable direction). For example, when grinding the corners of wooden furniture, you can wrap the sandpaper on your index finger and gently grind back and forth at the corners to remove burrs or flaws.
During the grinding process, maintain appropriate pressure. Excessive pressure may cause the sandpaper to wear too quickly and may leave too deep scratches on the surface of the material; too little pressure may not achieve the ideal grinding effect.
Use sandpaper blocks or sandpaper wheels
For large-area flat grinding, the sandpaper can be fixed on the sandpaper block for use. Stick the sandpaper flatly on the surface of the sandpaper block, and then use the sandpaper block to perform uniform reciprocating or circular motion on the surface of the material for grinding. For example, when grinding metal sheets, using emery cloth blocks can improve grinding efficiency and ensure the smoothness of grinding.
Emery cloth wheels are usually used for high-speed rotation grinding on power tools. Install the emery cloth wheel on the electric grinder, turn on the grinder, and gently touch the emery cloth wheel to the surface of the material to be polished. When using the emery cloth wheel, be sure to pay attention to safety and wear protective equipment such as protective glasses, because the high-speed rotating emery cloth wheel may throw out sand grains or broken emery cloth fragments.
3. Maintenance and replacement of emery cloth
Cleaning emery cloth
After using it for a period of time, the surface of the emery cloth will accumulate debris from grinding. If it is not cleaned in time, it will affect the grinding effect. You can use a brush to gently brush off the debris on the surface of the emery cloth, or use compressed air to blow away the debris.
Replace emery cloth
When the sand grains of the emery cloth are severely worn and the grinding effect is significantly reduced, the emery cloth needs to be replaced. Generally speaking, after a long period of grinding or grinding of materials with higher hardness, the sand grains of the emery cloth will gradually fall off. At this time, continuing to use it will not achieve the ideal grinding effect.
When used correctly, emery cloth can effectively help us perform operations such as grinding and polishing on various materials, thereby meeting our needs in various scenarios such as maintenance and making handicrafts.
