There are some noticeable differences in how paper-based and fabric-based substrates are used in sandpaper:

The sponge sandpaper with a paper-based substrate is cheaper. Usually, it's about one-third to two-thirds less expensive than the sponge sandpaper with a fabric-based substrate. The paper base is harder. So in the grinding process, it can make a surface with a really high polish. It's perfect for fine grinding and super fine grinding jobs. For example, in the production of mobile phone shells, digital electronics, and precision hardware, the sponge sandpaper with a paper-based substrate is often used.

But for the sponge sandpaper with a fabric base, its strength is higher than the paper base. And it's not as sensitive to temperature and humidity. That means even in places with high temperature or humidity, the fabric-based sponge sandpaper won't easily lose its stability. So, the fabric-based sponge sandpaper is more lasting and has a longer life. In some situations where there's a high demand for the durability of the sandpaper, the fabric-based sponge sandpaper is more preferred.

All in all, paper-based and fabric-based substrates each have their good points in sandpaper. Paper-based ones are more affordable and good for fine grinding. Fabric-based ones are stronger and more durable, and better for use in bad conditions. Choosing which kind of substrate for the sponge sandpaper still depends on the specific needs of the job.
