Sandpaper is a material used for grinding. It can be used to grind and polish the surfaces of wood, metal, etc. to make their surfaces smooth and flat. It is usually made of abrasives bonded to paper. Different sandpapers are selected according to different abrasive materials.
The structure of sandpaper
Sandpaper is mainly composed of three parts: base material, adhesive and abrasive.
Backing material: Commonly used are paper, cloth or polyester film, which provide strength and flexibility for sandpaper. For example, paper backing material is cheaper, cloth backing material is more durable, and polyester film backing material has better waterproof properties.
Adhesive: Such as resin, animal glue, etc., used to firmly fix the abrasive on the substrate. Different adhesives will affect the performance of sandpaper. Resin adhesives usually have better bonding strength and wear resistance.
Abrasive: It is the core component of sandpaper, responsible for grinding and polishing. Common ones include aluminum oxide, silicon carbide, zirconium oxide, etc. Aluminum oxide abrasive is relatively cheap and suitable for general grinding work; silicon carbide abrasive has higher hardness and is suitable for grinding harder materials; zirconium oxide abrasive has higher toughness and wear resistance and is often used for fine grinding.
Types of sandpaper
1.Dry sandpaepr
Suitable for dry sanding, commonly used for sanding wood, metal and plastic. It is convenient and quick to use in a dry environment, such as sanding and repairing wooden furniture.
2.Waterproof sandpaper
Also known as wet sandpaper, it can be used in water and is suitable for polishing before and after car painting. It can reduce dust and improve the finish. During the car painting process, using water sandpaper to polish the primer surface can make the paint surface smoother and reduce the impact of dust on the quality of the paint.
3.Sponge sandpaper
The base material is sponge, which has good flexibility and is suitable for grinding complex curved surfaces. For example, when grinding some crafts with irregular shapes, sponge sandpaper can better fit the curved surface and achieve a good grinding effect.
4.Dust-free sandpaper
With hole design, dust collection system can be used to reduce dust during grinding
Correct use method
1.Before use
Clean the surface to be polished to ensure that there is no dust and impurities to avoid affecting the polishing effect. For example, before polishing the metal surface, remove the oil and rust on the surface.
Cut the sandpaper into a suitable size for easy holding and operation. When cutting, pay attention to protect your hands to avoid injury.
2.When grinding
Hold the sandpaper and sand with appropriate force and angle. The force should be uniform. Too much force may cause surface damage, and too little force may not achieve the desired effect. At the same time, pay attention to changing the direction of sanding to ensure that the surface is even and flat.
After each period of sanding, clean up the sand and impurities on the surface to ensure that the surface is clean.
3.Replacement and other precautions
When the sandpaper is worn to a certain extent, replace it with new sandpaper in time to avoid affecting the grinding effect.
Choose the appropriate sandpaper mesh and model according to your needs. Different mesh and models are suitable for different grinding needs. For example, coarse sandpaper can be used for rough processing, and fine sandpaper or ultra-fine sandpaper is required for fine polishing. Avoid excessive grinding or improper use that may cause surface damage or excessive wear of sandpaper. When using sandpaper, avoid pressing hard on the sandpaper to avoid increasing the wear and heat of the sandpaper and affecting the grinding effect. For situations where water grinding is required, pay attention to controlling the amount of water. Too much or too little water will affect the grinding effect. Pay attention to safety when using sandpaper to avoid injuries caused by splashing sand. Check the wear of sandpaper regularly and replace it with new sandpaper in time.
