New Breakthrough in Domestic Scientific Research! Diamond High Pressure Loading Technology Breaks Through 500GPa Pressure For The First Time

Recently, Professor Huang Xiaoli's team from the School of Physics at Jilin University, together with Professor Tang Aoqing of Jilin University and Professor Cui Tian of Ningbo University, have made significant progress in the field of pressure loading technology of diamond anvil cells, successfully breaking the 500GPa pressure limit for the first time in China. The relevant research results were published in the journal Phys. Rev. B 111, 214101 (2025) under the title "Unified equation of state of tungsten up to 527 GPa using modified toroidal diamond anvil cells".

 

How great is this pressure?

 

Simply put, 500 GPa is equivalent to 1.5 times the pressure at the Earth's core! Or 5 million times the atmospheric pressure we live in every day. Studying matter in this unimaginable extreme environment can help us discover new materials, understand the internal structure of the Earth, and even the mysteries of the universe and planets.

 

The key to the breakthrough: improved "diamond anvil cell"

 

The core device that produces this ultra-high pressure is called a "diamond anvil cell" (DAC). It uses two extremely hard diamond tips to press the sample against each other. However, traditional diamond anvil cell technology has been stuck at the pressure threshold of 400 GPa and is difficult to break through.

 

Experimental discovery: Tungsten's "hard bones"

 

In order to test and calibrate this record-breaking pressure, scientists chose tungsten metal as the experimental material. The experiment showed that even under extreme pressures of up to 527 GPa, which is enough to crush most substances, the atomic arrangement structure of tungsten metal (called the "body-centered cubic" structure) remains stable and does not change. This super stability itself is an important scientific discovery. This important research result marks a new step for my country in the field of ultra-high pressure technology.
